2022 Kia Soul Towing Capacity

January 4th, 2022 by

The 2022 Kia Soul is a compact SUV that offers plenty of cargo storage options. Despite its small size, it’s equipped with a spacious cabin. But what about the Kia Soul’s towing abilities? We’ve got the answers to your towing questions here at Kia of Streetsboro.

Can the Kia Soul Tow a Trailer?

Kia does not recommend that the Soul be used to tow any load in its user manual. However, if you decide to pull a light trailer, you’ll need to equip your Soul with parts for the job, such as a trailer hitch and a trailer brake.

According to one auto writer, the Soul is sold in Australia with the same power train configurations and a towing capacity of 2,400 pounds. However, you should keep in mind that if your Soul is damaged due to towing, your warranty coverage may be affected because Kia doesn’t recommend any towing for its US Soul model.

A small-sized trailer with a modest load may typically weigh around 900 pounds. On the other hand, a small-sized pop-up camper can weigh between 1,000 and 1,500 pounds.

If you want a Kia with more potent towing abilities, you may want to take a look at the Sorento. When properly equipped, this mid-sized SUV can tow up to 3,500 pounds. Another option is the larger Telluride, which can haul up to 5,000 pounds. In addition, the Telluride is available with a towing package that includes several useful improvements, such as a tuned-up rear suspension.

Best Engine for Towing

If you decide to tow a light trailer with your Soul weighing around 1,000 pounds, you’ll probably want to have the more powerful turbocharged V-4 engine under the hood. This unit is available with the Soul’s top-of-the-line Turbo trim.

The Soul’s base engine is a 2.0-liter V-4 that generates 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque. That’s plenty of power to meet your day-to-day driving needs. However, the turbocharged engine adds more capability for hauling a light trailer, with 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque.

The turbocharged engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. With the base engine, you get a continuously variable transmission.

Other Cargo-Carrying Options

The Soul comes equipped with an impressive range of cargo-carrying possibilities for a subcompact SUV. First of all, you have 24.2 cubic feet of storage space behind the rear row of seats. That should be enough space to transport vacation luggage or items for an outdoor day trip while still carrying up to five passengers. If you need a touch more space, the rear row of seating has a 60-40 folding mechanism, allowing you to carry one rear-row passenger with some more cargo. Alternatively, you can fold the rear row flat to open up a total of 62 cubic feet behind the front seats. That’s among the largest cargo areas in the subcompact SUV class.

The base trim is also equipped with mounting points to add a roof rack for some extra storage space. In addition, the off-road-inspired X-Line trim is fitted with roof rails, so you can tie luggage down on top of your SUV without having to carry out any upgrades.

Other Exciting Features Available in the 2022 Kia Soul

The Soul offers six trims, from the competitively-priced LX to the more upmarket Turbo.

The Soul’s base setup has two rows of adult-friendly seating fitted with cloth upholstery. You also get a six-way adjustable driver’s seat and a four-way adjustable passenger’s seat. The S trim, which is the next step up, features premium cloth upholstery.

To add a touch more luxury to your cabin, you may be looking for the heated front seats that come with the EX trim. The range-topping Turbo trim features cloth and synthetic leather upholstery.

The Soul’s infotainment system stands out with an 8-inch screen and six-speaker stereo even in the base setup. Thanks to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, smartphone compatibility is also offered. Other standard connectivity options in the Soul include BlueTooth and a single USB port.

Step up to the S trim or higher to access premium infotainment features. You’ll get a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, wireless device charging, and a built-in navigation system. Another two USB ports are also included.

Another handy standard feature in the Soul is the rear seat alert. This warning system reminds you to check the back row and cargo area for children or pets before you exit your crossover.

A long list of additional safety features is available if you move up to the S trim or higher. These include forward-collision warning and pedestrian detection, which can help you avoid accidents caused by people or vehicles on the road. The forward automatic emergency braking system also serves as a backup in case you fail to respond to a detected danger in time.

A range of safety features helps you stay safe on the highway and during long drives. Lane Keep Assist (LKA) and lane departure warning enable you to keep on the right part of the road, while adaptive cruise control can maintain a safe distance from vehicles up ahead. In addition, the Soul’s driver attention monitor keeps track of your reactions and warns you when it’s time to take a break due to drowsiness. Finally, the rear cross-traffic alert feature warns you if a car crosses your path while you have your Soul in reverse.
